New Reburbia

The 400+ submissions to Reburbia have been whittled down to only 20 finalists – and they're now up for public voting.

[Image: The "Brick Habitats" by Chooi-Leng Tan are "a modular system of bricks which allows us to create a wide range of features on the side of our buildings including habitats for plants and animals, water bowls/baths, perches, shelters, feeders." From Reburbia].

Don't miss Calvin Chiu's "Frog's Dream," in which abandoned McMansions have been turned into "wetlands and natural water filtration systems for urban centers":
It proposes to transform the vacant McMansions, at the periphery of cities, into eco-water treatment machines... in which a micro-ecosystem of plants, algae, bacteria, fish and clams are present to purify the water. A micro-wetland ecosystem will be formed around these mansions to sustain larger wetland animals and plants.
Also worth a gander are the parking lots converted into farm plots, the MOS Studio-esque big box stores turned into biofuel generators, the backyard swimming pools turned into water treatment plants, and the "regenerative suburban median."

There is also a long list of noteworthy submissions, so check those out, as well. Of particular note are the awesome "brick habitats," the pyromaniac impulse to Let Them Burn!, the provocative "glass houses of (Matta) Clark County," and the "infill house," among many other strong submissions and ideas.
